Rome needed to modernise its connectivity infrastructure to support growing demand from residents, businesses and visitors, particularly ahead of the 2025 Jubilee year which was expected to attract millions of additional tourists. Delivering 5G across one of the world's most historic cities presented unique challenges due to UNESCO heritage protections, architectural preservation requirements and the need to minimise disruption to everyday life.

Boldyn Networks partnered with the Municipality of Rome under a 25-year agreement to deploy neutral host 5G and Wi-Fi infrastructure across the city. The solution included more than 2,200 small cells, public Wi-Fi in 100 squares, over 1,800 IoT modules, 2,000 smart cameras, and 5G coverage throughout the entire metro network. Existing street furniture such as lamp posts and bus shelters were used to integrate the technology discreetly into the urban environment.

The project is creating the foundations for one of Europe's most connected smart cities. Residents, visitors and mobile operators benefit from improved connectivity, while the city gains new capabilities in traffic management, public safety, environmental monitoring and municipal services. The initiative is expected to deliver €300-400 million in annual economic value, support significant employment growth, and help make Rome a smarter, safer and more digitally connected city.
