Boldyn powers 5G connectivity for Deutsche Bahn's first test operation of a remote-controlled S-Bahn train

25 February 2026 | Munich, Germany

Boldyn Networks (Boldyn), a leading global provider of shared networks and private 5G infrastructure, has powered a breakthrough trial with Deutsche Bahn (DB) in Munich. Using Boldyn’s reliable private 5G network, an S-Bahn train was remotely shunted for the first time ever. This milestone showcases how Boldyn‘s high-performance digital infrastructure is shaping the future of rail transportation.

During the test run at the S-Bahn depot in Munich-Steinhausen, a vehicle was controlled from an operating station indoors, using real-time video images instantly transmitted using Boldyn‘s powerful 5G private network.

When performing shunting manoeuvres, a locomotive driver normally has to walk to the vehicle and, if needed, switch driver's cabs. With 5G-enabled remote control technology, known as Remote Train Operation (RTO), this process becomes far more streamlined. RTO reduces the driver’s workload and makes operations safer, more efficient and more flexible.

The private 5G network as the digital backbone

The technological requirements at RTO are high. Control commands must be transmitted in real time, while high-resolution train-camera images and status information of the vehicle must reach the control station screens instantly. This is essential for safe and precise maneuvering. Any delays impact reactions, precise manoeuvres become more difficult, and safety risks increase. A high-performance 5G private network is the digital backbone of remote operations. It powers reliable connectivity for seamless data transfer and enables a continuous connection between the train, sensors, cameras and remote control station, even in the complex and shielded environment of a depot.

Ruediger Hnyk, Chief Operating Officer of Boldyn Networks in Germany, said: "This test demonstrates what’s technically possible with powerful private 5G infrastructure in the railway environment. Remote-controlled operation requires consistently stable, secure and extremely low-latency communication – this is exactly where private 5G networks excel. They are a crucial foundation for modern rail operations - enabling remote‑controlled shunting and supporting further advances in automation, maintenance, and digitalised workflows.

Together with Deutsche Bahn: From testing to implementation

A year ago, Deutsche Bahn signed an agreement with Boldyn for the planning, delivery, construction and operation of the private 5G network to enable future digitalisation and automation projects. This first of its kind, successful test deployment further cements Boldyn’s role as a leading infrastructure partner for digital transformation in rail transportation.

"Close cooperation with Deutsche Bahn is a key factor for success. Together, we are creating the infrastructure necessary to not only test digital applications in the railway environment, but also to bring them into full operation in the future." emphasises Ruediger Hnyk.
